Little did we know that would be the fastest laps ever at indy. The cars looked better and sounded much better back then. No comparison to today.
I only pray that somewhere Donald wrote down all that he knows.
Wait, what about Castroneves's fourth win? Or maybe Newgarden's win that happened this year?
I am really glad he went on to be an Indy 500 winner years after this.
It was so much better when it was all oval and the Indy Racing League.
At 1:02:55 someone asked Chip when Kyle Larson would be coming to race the 500.
Crazy, I was there sitting under the overhang. I actually was watching him pull into the pits with a pair of binoculars I saw him trying to get out of the car. Because the flames are clear I couldn’t see the flames. Incredible to see it again.
Turbo V6s are killing motorsports. V6s in general. Most dull sounding engines ever. Bring the V8s back
What was the top speed on the straight?
1996 was the last year of the 2.65L V8T. 1997 brought NA cross plane V8 which sounded like a stockcar and was 20 mph per lap slower. Indycar has not recovered since the split.
"Aaaand heeee diditagain!"
28 years ago, and almost 3 MPH than 2024
CART was the real deal, Indy Car now is a spec series.
I think that it is "peculiar" that they just happened to have filmed a segment detailing the fireproofing and resistance each piece of the gear a driver wears in the cockpit of an Indy Car and ran it right after all this happened. Could be just a coincidence and I hope that it was but..... 🤔
A 250 LM actually races. - check out Goodwood revival
Watch Chris Harris drive one of these at Goodwood.
It was so long ago but I am glad people give due to the 1960 battle between Rathmann and Ward. Could be the best 1 on 1 battle in Indy 500 history
Chevy may own Indy now but a Ford powered car still has the records.
good boy goood boy
Was this the first methanol fire incident? Also does people during that time knows that when methanol is burning it produces invisible flames?
Probably the greatest iteration of an Indycar ever. Rivals any F1 car I've seen in terms of beauty and it sure had awesome speed!
Gives me goosebumps.. Bobby Rahal is legendary.
I’m back after watching the 234.22 yesterday. I need someone to make a visualization that shows how quickly Arie would be walking away. Record laps in succession, faster the further he goes. That NEVER happens anymore.
Why are the engines not as good now as 30 years ago? What happened. They even sound better then. They even look better. I just watched the 2024 time trials today and they were going on on about how 234 was an all-time indie record ? How?
Well they are smaller for starters, 2.7L V8 vs 2.2L V6. The old V8s produced around 900-980 HP compared to 800Hp from the v6s. This was just the natural progression as manufacturers were focused on road relevance and downsizing.
This record came on qualifying day 2. Arie’s car was underweight on day 1 so his 235 lap was disallowed. Despite doing this, he started 21st due to being on the second day.
I wonder what would be track record 1994 Penske car didnt sandbag in qualifying
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼❤️
Fucking vet INDY! Wát een geluid! En nog steeds niet verbroken dat record.
Back when The 500 was still an exciting event to experience live. The irl truly messed this place up - it is a shame.
Funny how the place was packed this year, cheering crowds, etc. Quit pretending the past was better, simply because you experienced it... You had nothing to do with it.
Any expert out there that can clarify how he kept improving speed from lap to lap ? I have never seen it happen nowadays
Rick Mears.. Legend.
An incredible man. Myself and my son are named after him and astronaut Alan Shepard. Incredible how many different cars aj won in and how he survived the most dangerous times in racing
that was one of the cheapest ingredients of gasoline, it should be ehtanol and not the methanol
his wife was hot
What's messed up is I am only here because Will Ferrell thought he was on fire in talladega nights. Lord, forgive me.
Amazing story...of both "I.M.S. 500" record holders. The loss of Britain's Dan Wheldon was tragic! I wonder if he would have been with Indy Car wins like Will Power or Scott Dixon?
Donald always IS the I.M.S. Historian that is, as of this month: May, 2024, celebrating his 60th Year of being "the man with the Speedway history". Now I know about the 1970's to some of the '80's years of Spike Gillhausen...where he got his first name via the harlious "Spike Jones Band" of the 1940's and '50's. Haha!
I was there. I was 11, and we were seated above that pit (the farthest one).
Bobby and Sam so busy trying to out do each other describing how great Michael’s pass they didn’t even see Mears was about to pass Andretti.
The verbal fellatio on Andretti's pass was funny. They were gaga over it, I thought Rick's pass was slightly better. Rick was the man.
Damn that was scary.
Had front row seats for both, but 1982 was better than 1992. Mears actually got next to Johncock after chasing him down and Gordy, with the lesser car handling terribly, fought him off then kept his car off the wall for the last lap. Great list but how could it be otherwise when Rathmanm-Ward is No. 10? I liked Helio’s 4th win because it was a huge upset and it was our first 500 back after the year when it was run with no fans.
This man taught me how to snow ski and no one around him deserves him.
That was a missle.
The Master Of The Oval, Rick Mears, The G D O A T, Period😊.
Then Tony George set back racing technology/progress by decades and as a result this is still the track record in 2024.
He was rather bush league along with the early days of the IRL before CART started to go under from not having a working relationship with IMS.
Love the Novi's.
"You know that's a good car. I stuffed the clutch in it and revved it to 78 hundred rpm and it didn't even bend the valves!"-Masten Gregory to Caroll Shelby
In other words the schmuck cat shift the trans without grinding the gears. Dude you need to take lessons from trick drivers. We shift non syncro trans all day.
Why cant we have fast speeds like this now? We have improved safety but slower cars?
Why the irritating music?
